Installing
Grand Slam On Hardtop
|
Handy Hank's Tip: As a rule of thumb,
if the hard top is strong enough to walk on, it is usually
strong enough to mount an outrigger on it .
- If you have foam or core filled hardtop make
sure its thickness does not exceed 2-1/2".
- Select the mounting location of the Grand Slam
Mount keeping in mind that the center of the 3" hole
must be a minimum of 7-1/2" away from anything
that might interfere with the rotation of the handle
underneath the hard top.
- Using the template, mark the center of the 3" hole
in both port and starboard locations.
- With a 3" hole saw, make the holes in the hard
top.
- Insert the Grand Slam Base into the hole with
the outrigger arm laying down resting on the lip
facing the stern. It is easier to tell if
the base is straight if you place an outrigger
in the tube.
- With the outrigger facing straight back, mark
where the four mounting holes have to be drilled
on both port and starboard locations.
- Using a 5/16" drill bit drill the four mounting
holes in each location.
- If your hardtop is foam or core filled, it is
recommended that you use spacers (small lengths
of tubing) to fit inside where the mounting bolts
pass through. This will prevent the top from
compressing when you tighten the bolts.
- Put a bead of silicone on the underside of the
flat plate of the Grand Slam to form a seal around
the hole.
- Place the Grand Slam Mount so that the barrel
goes through the 3" hole and line up the four mounting
holes with the four holes in the base.
- Install the four mounting bolts down through
the Grand Slam Mount, through the hardtop and through
the backing plate on the underside of the hardtop.
- Install nuts and washers and tighten the bolts
making sure that you do not compress the hardtop.
- Rotate the bottom of the Grand Slam to align
it with the handle hole and install the operating
lever with the nylon bushings by pushing it firmly
in and slightly down until you feel the nylon bushings
seat into the sockets.
- With the handle all the way in, hand tighten
the collar to secure the handle.
- Repeat steps 9 through 14 on the other Grand
Slam.

Installing
Grand Slam On T-Top or Arch
|
These usually have an aluminum plate running for and aft
on each side between the brace bars.
Unlace the canvas enough to expose the aluminum strips
of the T-Top.
- To find the proper location of the aluminum
plate keep in mind that the center of the 3" hole
must be 7-1/2" away from any horizontal or
vertical tubing that might prevent the Grand
Slam handle from rotating outboard.
- If you are going to install your own plates,
un-lace the canvas and weld aluminum plates
to the aluminum strips running fore and aft
on either side of the T-top. The plates
must have the minimum dimensions of: 3/8" thick
X 5" wide X 7" long and they should be welded
on 3 sides. If you are using our weld-on mounting
plate GSE-1939 or our clamp-on mounting plate
GSE-1002 steps 4-8 have been done for you. It
is not necessary to un-lace the canvas if you
are using our clamp-on mounting plate.
- Using the template, mark the center of the
3" hole making sure that it is at least 7-1/2" away
from anything that might interfere with the
handle rotation. Using a 3" hole saw,
drill a 3" hole through the plate.
- Insert the Grand Slam Base into the 3" hole
with the arm facing aft. Install an outrigger
in the tube to make sure that the outrigger
is facing straight back.
- Mark where the four 5/16" mounting holes
should go and remove the outrigger and the
Grand Slam Base.
- Drill the four 5/16" mounting holes.
- Repeat steps 4 through 7 on the other plate.
- Lace up the canvas
- With a razor knife cut an X in the canvas
at the 3" holes in both of the aluminum plates.
- Put a bead of silicone on the underside of
the Grand Slam Bases around the barrel and
insert into the holes through the canvas top
making sure the outrigger tubes are facing
aft and install the bolts and nuts.
- Install the operating lever with the two
white bushings by pushing it into the hole
and moving it up and down until you hear it
click in and hand tighten the locking ring. Test
the Grand Slam by pulling down o the handle
and rotate into different positions all the
way around.
- Your Grand Slam bases are now installed.
